Well, my fears have become reality. The transmission has been rough on my 98 CL 3.0 since I bought it last year (83K), and this weekend the "check engine" light came on, and the transmission was really rough for a while. The dealer gave me a code of p0740, and flat out told me that I just needed a new transiossion ($3845). Yet today, the tranmission is running fine! The check engine light is still on.
what exactly does this code mean? And with the transmission running seemingly well, is it a false alarm? Or a time bomb waiting to go off?
And isn't $3845 a little steep for a transmission?

The code is for a tranny malfunction, i'd have to check further to see exactly what is malfunctioning, but trannies aren't the kinda things that have false alarms.

$3875 is a little steep, but thats the price you pay when you go to the dealer. It would be a little cheaper at a local shop or say Amacco

Thanks. Any ideas as to how I would determine exactly what is going on? The acura dealership i took the car to was not interested in anything except doing a replacement.

If you have the skills to test line pressure and repair the hydraulic system if its out of spec, you could try that. The only other thing than replacement would be to replace the lock-up conrtol solenoid. If that doesn't do the trick a new tranny is necessary. Honestly, replacing it would be easiest and the little money (if any) you would save really isn't worth it.

Sorry Sad
