I took my 95 Legend to an independent mechanic who installed new axles and supposedly changed the oil. But when I got the car back, it started VERY rough and began shaking, and it continued to be rough for a few days. Then blue smoke started coming from the tailpipe.
I took it back in, they looked at it for a few minutes (I was not watching them do this), and magically it started up fine (this after 15 startups in my care, all horrible). I pressed the gas while in park, and the blue smoke still appeared.
He told me to bring it back in if I had any more problems with it.
I was suspicious at this point, so I had a friend look at the oil and do an oil change himself. He said that the oil looked black and had a red tinge to it. After he changed the oil, it ran well (no shaking on startup) for about a day, but then the trouble began again. This time I took the car to an Acura dealership. They said it's a valve problem and that it will need a new engine (around $4100).
I'm clueless when it comes to what goes on under the hood. But I'm also a little worried about this recommendation since they know I'm looking for a new car.
Can this car can be fixed without having to purchase a new engine?

Sounds like they put transmission fluid in the engine. Trans fluid is a dark red color. That would definitely ruin your engine. How long did you drive it like this? Hopefully you kept the "oil" that your friend drained out of it. You can use this as evidence. I would take the garage to small claims court and make them replace your engine.
wow if they did put tranny fluid in the engine you have a case....thats why i will never have my car fixed by a so called "mechanic" unless i am friends with them
