Does anyone know the laws for Michigan on tinting windows. I'm going to be tinting the windows in my car soon and don't want to get pulled over for having them to dark. I've been told that you can tint the rear and smaller windows as dark as you want, but the driver and passenger window you have to be able to see figures inside the car. Is any of that true? or am i just being filled with crap.

i was told that any kind of tinting is "technically" illegal and it's up to the cops disgression...my bro had his camaro tinted 20% on the side windows and 5% on the back, and he has had no probs whatsoever with the police....but then again my other friend got pulled over for speeding and (with a tinted firebird) and he got a warning...i think you'll be ok, just dont go overboard and it should be fine

I live in Frankfort. It's about 30 minutes south of Traverse City directly on the lake.

Note : Changes to the law has been discussed such as allowing for 35% tint on the front side windows but the State Police would push hard for a complete ban on tint if it got through and they have the political power to do it.
Enforcement Note : Michigan State police will give the 3rd degree look to any car that is not in compliance with MI tint law but will usually leave out-of-state motorist alone. |

My step dad is a cop. I asked him about this once. He said all after market tinting is illegal. Only the manufacturer can tint the windows of a car before it is assemblied. Although if done well a light tint cant be recognized and may be able to slip by. I dont think alot of cops waste much time with this unless they really want to ruin your day. Aka if you drive around with a sticker that says F you pig doing 125 in a 30 and give the guy a hard time, he'll pick out every little thing to just piss you off. But I know a couple people that had their back windows tinted almost pure black and cops dont mind as long as the front ones are good and it doesnt caues a safety issue. One guy however had his painted pure black so you couldnt see through them period and he had to get a new windshield cause it was a safety hazard not being able to see behind you. Which anyways why would you not want to see whats going on behind you?
