Suspension: Information: An Introduction (Steering Basics)
It seems like everyone is
always so concerned with their engines that they forget all about their
suspension. Its no big mystery that drag racing (straight line speed) is the
primary concern of Import enthusiasts, but those of you you love tackling the
corners I give a this article, a little insight into the workings of modern
suspension system.
The most profound and yet one of the most elementary
principles of cornering is Ackerman Steering. It is simple really the
greater the radius the greater the circumference of an a circle. You may be
asking yourself what does that have to with steering and cornering. Well, when
going around a corner/arc you are simply traveling the circumference of some
circle. Since the outside wheel is further from the center it must travel a
greater distance, and the inside wheel of the steered axle must travel a tighter
arc than the outside. If both wheels turned the same amount as with a straight
axel both wheels would effectively be following different curves around the same
corner which would result in a significant reduction in grip. The concept
behind Ackerman steering allows the inside wheel to turn on a tighter arc than
the outside wheel. Toe-Out is also increased
during cornering to improve stability. Ackerman Steering is not a new concept,
it has been know to automotive engineers for decades, all the way back to the
some of the very first automobiles.

Acura News: Honda Factory Performance,(TM) Acura A-SPEC(TM) Vehicles T
Honda unveiled the high performance kits for the Civic Si and Acura TL at the
2003 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) trade show in Las Vegas on
Tuesday 11/04/03. The Acura A-SPEC package for the TL performance luxury sedan
debuts in November while the Honda Factory Performance (HFP) kit for the Civic
Si goes on sale in December. Acura also announced it has re-launched its Factory
Performance program as Acura A-SPEC, a term signifying the highest level of
engineering quality, to brand Acura's program and differentiate it from Honda
Factory Performance.
Honda also debuted new stylized concept versions of the Honda Element and
Acura TSX, as well as cars driven by standout drivers Stephan Papadakis and RJ
DeVera.
"The vehicles we have on display at SEMA not only confirm Honda's and Acura's
present commitment to the performance aftermarket, they also give a good
indication of how important we expect this market to be to us in the future,"
said Jim Roach, American Honda vice president of the Parts Division.
"Participating in SEMA is extremely important for American Honda because it lets
us reach out to this influential group of customers at one of the most important
trade shows of the year."

Acura is re-launching its Acura Factory Performance program as Acura
A-SPEC, the company announced on 11/4/03 at SEMA. When launching the program
at last year's SEMA show with the announcement of a performance kit for the
Acura RSX Type-S, Acura called the program Acura Factory Performance. The
name change was made to brand Acura's program and differentiate it from
Honda Factory Performance, a similar program for Honda vehicles.
"A-SPEC stands for the highest level of quality and engineering, and more
accurately reflects the standard we're striving for with our high
performance accessory package program," said Jim Roach, American Honda vice
president of the Parts Division.

Pierre Kleinubing took over
the Driver's Championship points lead in the SCCA Speed World Challenge
Touring Car series at Lime Rock Park today with his second win in three
races, driving the RealTime Racing Acura RSX.
Kleinubing qualified fourth fastest in a 51-car field crowded onto a rainy
1.53-mile circuit, moved to second place on the first lap, into the lead
on the third lap, and was never challenged after that.
The three-time series champion won by 16.663 seconds. It was his fourth
Lime Rock Park win and the 18th of his career, all in Acuras prepared by
RealTime.
The win gave Acura the lead for the Manufacturer's Championship going into
the fourth of 10 rounds this season, June 27-29 at Road Atlanta.

Hirotoshi Honda has stepped down as president of Mugen after being arrested on
suspicion of substantial tax evasion. Honda, now age 61, is accused of evading
$8.3 million in corporate taxes by hiding $25 million by creating false accounts
to hide the revenue. Norio Hirokawa, Mugen's auditor, was also arrested along
with Honda. They allegedly doctored the books for three years between 1997 and
2000.
Hirotoshi's father Soichiro, founder of the Honda Motor company, held a imposing
40% stake in Mugen until 1999 when the shares were returned to Hirotoshi. Honda
Motor Company announced that they were "very surprised" at the arrest but said
in a statement that they were aware that Mugen was under investigation.

Surprisingly enough it was not its engine, or its handling that impressed me most
about the new Acura RSX. It was the new sense of class and refinement that really grabbed my attention.
While its predecessor, the integra, was a solid reliable car, it was not really
designed for the comfort minded. It was a "few frills" pocket rocket with
limited luxury aspects and a fairly loud exhaust that could grow somewhat
irritating. Now the integra was no slouch in its day. In comparison, the RSX-S
is a step up, Acura has taken the Integra to a new level with the RSX. The ride
is better damped and controlled; the noise levels are reduced and what you still
hear has a more refined sound; the feeling of the materials in the interior -
dash, seats, carpet, etc. - are all a step up. Acura has truly made the RSX fit into a luxury lineup, something that could not be said of the 3rd generation Integra.
Most importantly this new level of class and refinement did not come at the
expense of the sporty performance the made the Integra famous. The new K20
engine is a screaming powerhouse just like its predecessor's B series engine,
when you push it it pulls with the best of them. One of the large faults with
the Integra was its poor low end torque numbers, an aspect that has been
improved with the RSX-S. The new chassis is still nimble and handles as well as,
if not better than the GS-R with better steering response and less body roll.
Acura also include a 6th gear for more relaxed highway cruising.

Acura News: Acura To Offer Factory Performance Package for RSX Type-S
Cleveland, Ohio 07/11/2002 -- Acura will offer its first Factory Performance package for the RSX Type-S at dealerships nationwide beginning in early 2003, the company announced today.
The Factory Performance package features track-tuned shocks and springs that lower the car by approximately one inch. These shocks and springs combined with lightweight aluminum alloy wheels, 17-inch high performance tires, slotted brake rotors and performance brake pads give the RSX Type-S razor sharp handling, reduced body roll, increased cornering grip and enhanced braking performance. A rear wing spoiler, an under-body spoiler kit and an interior trim package featuring a Factory Performance shift knob and badging, give the car an aggressive, high performance look.

Acura News: All-New TL and TSX Lead Performance Surge for Acura 2004 Model Changes
With the addition of the new 200 horsepower TSX sports sedan and the
completely redesigned 270 horsepower TL performance luxury sedan, Acura's 2004
lineup features more horsepower, better handling precision and more aggressive
styling than ever before.
The new 2004 TL, Acura's best-selling sedan, gets a retooled powertrain and, for
the first time, an available close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission. Suspension
settings have been revised to provide more precise handling and an improved
ride. The TL interior sets a new benchmark, with advanced new technology
including a standard 5.1 DVD-Audio system, and a standard Bluetooth hands-free
